Subject Objectives

This course is designed to help the students study and work efficiently in an English-speaking environment. It aims at improving the IFI students’ English by providing them with necessary skills namely listening, speaking, summarizing an article and writing correspondence.

After this course, the students are able to:

1.      Understand audio documents about general topics.

2.      Communicate in person or over the phone with other people. 

3.      Express their points of view and feelings.

4.      Speak about themselves, their family, their learning and working environment.

5.      Write a summary of an article.

6.      Exchange information and ideas in written English, especially via formal and informal correspondence.

7.      Understand about recruitment procedure as well as application procedure to write an appropriate CV with cover letter and to succeed in a job interview. 

8.      Use correct basic grammatical structures in different situations.

 

Content

Listening and Speaking

  • Developing listening comprehension skills: catching main ideas, detailed ideas…
  • Developing speaking skills.
  • Listening to dialogues, texts, news on general topics.
  • Building vocabulary on formal and informal English.

 

Grammar & Writing

  • Reviewing basic grammatical structures (Tenses and Parts of Speech)
  • Writing a summary of an article.
  • Writing simple social letters/ emails.
  • Writing a CV and a cover letter.

 

Methodology

  • After listening to materials, students are expected to complete exercises given (note-taking, questions answering, gap filling, summarizing…) and speak about the related topics.
  • The students are also provided with the topics/ tasks for writing and speaking
  • Some grammatical materials are given for practice in class and some for self-study.
  • In most of the lessons, the class is divided into two groups studying in two periods of 90 minutes. While one group is working with given listening or writing tasks, the other is working with given speaking tasks or listening to the teacher’s theoretical review. Then the students of two groups swap the tasks.

     

Assessment

§         Small Tests:                    15%

§         Mid-term Test:                 20% (Listening, Speaking, Grammar,  and Writing)

§         Assignment:                    15%

§         Final examination:            50% (Listening: 20%, Speaking: 20% and Writing: 10%)
