Seminaire presented by VO Duc An, Ph.D. Students IFI - IRD - Paris 6, at IFI, 14h00, 11 march 2010.

Title: Towards a language to represent and specify emergent phenomenon in agent-based models.

Presenter: Vo Duc An.

Resume: Appearance of pheromone trails built by ants, evolution of social groups within a population, formation of arches in granular media: whatever the application domain considered, a modeler willing to develop an agent-based model of a complex system will handle (implicitly or explicitly), in addition to the entities employed to represent the system in question, abstractions corresponding to emerging patterns he would like to search, analyze or understand in the simulations. The aim of this thesis is to propose a modeling language allowing the modeler to represent and specify the emergent phenomenon in agent-based models.

We begin this presentation with a brief review of two key concepts: model and simulation. Then we present the notion of emergent patterns, which motivates this work, in some simple agent-based models. After that, we show how the solution proposed has been implemented within the GAML modeling language, on the GAMA agent-based platform. Finally, in order to illustrate our approach, we conclude with some demos of the representation of some emergent phenomena in the Boids models.

Keywords: agent-based model, simulation, emergent pattern, GAML language, GAMA platform.
